We had five Crawley, one Reading and one Kent school attend this course on 23rd January. We held this training at Thales, where, over lunch, previously trained Engineers came along to meet the schools and teachers.

Feedback from teachers “Very supportive and helpful team running the event, the resources provided to take back to school were great, a very enjoyable day” & “ The day has been great fun, finding out about primary engineering opportunities for the children. Very inspiring thank you.”

We hosted our training course at Dunoon Grammar School – Thank you to David Mitchell. We trained 10 schools and had great support from the Royal Navy too. We themed our shoe box models around the four seasons.

Great feedback from teachers on the day : “I attended the course instead of my Head Teacher, who was unable to make it. I feel very lucky to have been able to participate and it was really good fun. Thank you very much for the resources which I will give to both schools and they will be delighted. We will definitely have a go with the project.” & “Brilliant course, thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the hands on approach and working collaboratively. Great course leader and support from Jemma and Lise.”

Webster’s High School in Angus kindly hosted our training course and gave amazing support, thank you to Derek Mclnally. We had support from four teachers from Webster’s High school as well as engineers who will be supporting the schools.

We themed this on Winter Olympics 2018. We trained ten teachers, eight schools and got some great feedback “ Fantastic fun today, increased my knowledge and confidence in design and technology and I’m excited to take what I have learned back to my school to involve the children. I know they are going to love this! Dale was super as a trainer, made it very straight forward for me to understand and enjoyable.”

We trained five schools and seven teachers at the CSIC in Hamilton. With three support colleagues from Hamilton Grammar.

The teachers had some great feedback “ Very enjoyable day. Brilliantly led and appropriate. Left with everything I need to take it forward. “ & “This was a fantastic training session with many practical ideas. I feel it has given me a real boost in self confidence to deliver to the primary children. Thank you to all the staff involved who were fantastic and so helpful!”

We were also able to have a tour of the factory at the end of the day.

There was no time to waste recently when seven teachers from Burnley and Blackburn came to Primary Engineer HQ after a day of teaching.

We ran the Structures and Mechanism course over two twilight sessions for three schools who had great fun constructing their vehicles.

All the schools will now deliver the project to their pupils and will attend a celebration event later in the year.

Marine engines bigger than cars provided the backdrop to the latest round of Primary school Teacher training in Greater Manchester. ManDiesel in Stockport hosted a Primary Engineer training day for teachers from nine local Primary schools to learn how to deliver an engineering activity in their classrooms to children of various ages and abilities.

Liam Weatherill, Primary Engineer Regional Director, said “It is essential that we bring teachers into an industrial setting away from the classroom to give them an appreciation of an engineering environment.  Many of the teachers have not had personal experiences of working within industry and coming to such an excellent venue affords an introduction to an engineering workplace. The training is centred on introducing engineering methodologies into the classroom through projects that are both competitive and curriculum-based.”

The course title for the training day is ‘Structures and Mechanics with Basic Electrics’ and utilises these aspects of engineering to produce ‘Shoe-box’ cars with a range of complexities that are commensurate with the age-ranges and abilities of children throughout the school years. Teachers learn how to construct vehicles of differing functionality and format using tools, engineering processes and following direction, and also how to access the online resources provided by Primary Engineer necessary to run the activity in the classroom.

Jo Norwood, Primary Engineer Events Manager said “It is always a pleasure to see teachers grow in confidence during the training day and move from trepidation to excitement and show a real desire to start delivering the sessions within their classroom. Having engineer support on the day from ManDiesel also adds to the general understanding of why engineers do things in a certain way, and this will be replicated in the school classrooms where Engineers will join in with the teaching staff and pupils to work through the project.”

Dave Seneviratne, Science and Engineering Lead Teacher at Alexandra Park Primary school in Stockport, attended the day. “I’d like to thank Primary Engineer for providing such an amazing training opportunity. It has been really useful, engaging and inspiring. I can’t wait to implement what I have learnt back at school.”

The teachers will run the projects in their individual Primary schools with the support of their “Classroom Engineer”. In addition to producing working vehicles, the Classroom Engineer can pose and answer questions to increase the children’s knowledge of STEM and Engineering and provide a real-world aspect to the tasks they are undertaking.

Stockport Council has commissioned Primary Engineer to deliver the programme across nine local primary schools in addition to one Secondary school.  The programme builds toward a Celebration event where all participating schools have representative teams across the age-ranges that compete against each other in a series of challenges. There are judging panels that consider all aspects of design, functionality and performance and winning teams are presented with their deserved prizes.

The ultimate aim of the programme is to inspire young people to find and solve those problems and understand the engineering methodology behind the solutions. Teachers increase their knowledge and understanding of how to deliver the tasks using tools and a range of resources and by doing this increase their confidence to repeat the process in subsequent years with this and other activities. The connection between industry and schools formed through the relationship with the Classroom Engineer is an important benefit, and the programme can play a significant role in giving young people an appreciation of the opportunities of what a future in STEM, and especially engineering, can bring.

We also took our Early Years programme to Oldham Sixth Form College where Nick trained 13 teachers. The attendees enjoyed working out how best to share what they were learning with their own pupils. That confidence-building is what our programmes are all about – along with moving cars down a track using magnets and figuring out how to stop a falling egg from smashing. Thanks to the venue, Oldham Enterprise Trust, Stoller Charitable Trust and Oldham Council.

We travelled down to Lichfield Cathedral School to deliver Early Years training, illustrating how using shakers, hand puppets and Humpty Dumpty can be linked to engineering. Thanks to Carl Zeiss UK and BECS Link for funding the programme and Lichfield Cathedral School for their wonderful hospitality!

Following training in Lichfield of sixteen teachers from eleven schools we received some amazing feedback. Joanna Churton from Lichfield Cathedral School contacted us to let us know about the Early Engineers programme that was undertaken.

“I am writing to say that we were delighted with the training course yesterday and that the day was a huge success.  Nick and Liam did a great job and the delegates that took part had a very productive and engaging morning.”

She then goes on to say, “Many children are going to benefit from this event and the practitioners went home inspired with fresh ideas and appropriate activities and terminology to share with children. It was lovely also that Liam was able to meet briefly with our Year 4 team who were actually building their cars that same afternoon having benefitted from the STEM training last term –‘poetry in motion’ so to speak. So a very successful event all round; thank you to all at Primary Engineer.”

We couldn’t keep people away from St Bernadette’s Primary School on February 14th, with three applications arriving on the day of the training! In keeping with the date, some of the vehicles were decorated with a Valentine’s Day theme. The enthusiastic response from the 15 teachers present suggested there was something in the air. Thanks to Babcock for funding the training.

For the first of three days in Scotland we travelled all the way up to Aberdeen through some worrying snow. The day went really well, with a supporting engineer for each school provided by Arup and Amey. The electric cars and shoe box vehicles came together really well and didn’t have to contend with any ice – unlike us when we drove to the next event straight afterwards.
